Developing process safety indicators as part of Process Safety Management

We regularly undertake process safety management system projects for hazardous facilities process plants, COMAH facilities including existing distillery clients.

While the challenges, threats and opportunities at each site are unique, the systems we are designing all have the key elements of policy, objectives and targets, monitoring and measurement and continual improvement at their core.

We know one size does not fit all. We recognise good practice form other high hazard industries and deliver fit for purpose solutions based on our years of experience alongside detailed knowledge of the sector, operations and cultures of the clients we support.

Embedding PSM at the start of a project delivers effective and efficient results. The system can evolve with the operation.

When we are invited to support a mature operation, one common theme we identify is lack of historical data-analysis of these data sets provides an essential ‘early warning system’ to identify high risk areas for focus.

One way to better understand your operations is to implement a robust suite of process safety indicators to obtain this baseline data. HSG 254 Developing Process Safety Indicators is a good place to start with its 6 step guide to performance measurement.

It all comes back to ensuring your systems are robust enough to indicate the potential system weaknesses before catastrophic failure while ensuring the workforce is engaged with the process.

A work force that is confident that the leadership team support PSM will tend to do the right thing.
