Process Safety Solutions

At IDEA we provide quality process safety solutions that are designed to mitigate the risks associated with operations in high hazard industries. Our team of experts has decades of experience in process safety, and we use the latest technologies and best practices to ensure that our clients’ operations are safe, efficient, and compliant with all relevant regulations.

Our Process Safety Solutions:

At IDEA, we offer a range of process safety solutions that are designed to meet the unique needs of our clients. Our solutions include:

Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) Studies:

Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies are systematic and structured reviews conducted to identify potential hazards, operability issues, and deviations from intended design in industrial processes. During a HAZOP study, our multidisciplinary team of experts examines the process systematically, focusing on each process unit, equipment, and associated operating procedures. By applying a set of guide words (such as “no,” “more,” “less,” “as well as,” and “reverse”), the team systematically identifies deviations from the intended design and analyses their potential consequences. The goal of a HAZOP study is to identify and assess risks, propose risk mitigation measures, and enhance the overall safety and operability of the process.

Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA):

Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is a systematic and quantitative approach used to assess and analyze the effectiveness of safety layers or safeguards in managing and mitigating risks in industrial processes. LOPA studies are usually used to analyse high severity scenarios identified during HAZOP in more detail and aims to identify and evaluate the potential scenarios where the existing safeguards may fail or not adequately control the associated risks. It involves quantifying the likelihood of a hazardous event and the consequences that could arise if the safeguards were to fail. By assigning risk levels and utilizing predetermined risk criteria, LOPA studies help determine the need for additional safeguards including Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) or risk reduction measures to achieve the desired level of risk mitigation.

Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) Assessments

DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) studies are comprehensive assessments carried out to identify and manage the risks associated with the presence of dangerous substances that could create explosive atmospheres in the workplace. These studies are conducted in accordance with UK regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with safety standards. DSEAR studies involve evaluating the potential for the formation of explosive atmospheres, assessing the ignition sources that could trigger an explosion, and determining the adequacy of existing control measures. By identifying hazardous areas, implementing appropriate control measures, suitably rating equipment and providing guidance on safe working practices, DSEAR studies help protect workers and the environment from the risks associated with dangerous substances.

Functional Safety Assessments (FSA)

Functional Safety Assessments (FSA) are systematic evaluations conducted to verify and validate the effectiveness and reliability of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and their associated functions within a process plant. The primary goal of a functional safety assessment is to ensure that the safety instrumented systems are capable of performing their intended functions to reduce or eliminate risks to an acceptable level. FSAs involve assessing the design, implementation, and operation of the safety instrumented systems against established standards and requirements. This includes reviewing documentation, conducting inspections, and performing functional testing to verify the system’s performance and compliance. By identifying any gaps or deficiencies in the safety systems, FSAs help to enhance the overall functional safety and provide assurance that the required risk reduction measures are properly implemented and maintained within the process plant. Our team qualified functional safety engineers have extensive experience in SIS design and implementation.
