What is Instrumentation Design?

Instrumentation Design is the process of specifying and selecting systems used to measure, control, and monitor industrial processes.

It involves selecting and integrating various instruments, such as sensors, transmitters, and controllers, to ensure precise control and accurate data collection for process variable measurements including pressure, temperature, flow, and level.

The correct selection and application of instrumentation is essential for improving product quality and operational performance.

Our Instrumentation and Control Engineering Process

Our control and instrumentation engineering processes are comprehensive and designed to ensure that all aspects of your instrumentation needs are met with precision and efficiency. Here’s a look at each step of our process:

Engineering Design:

We start by thoroughly understanding your operational requirements and process conditions. Our engineering team then selects and specifies the most suitable instruments for your application, including sensors, transmitters, controllers, and analysers. A complete review of the existing control system is completed to establish which communications protocols should be used and determine how each instrument will be connected to the control system. This includes identifying and highlighting if any expansion to the existing control system is required to accommodate the additional signals.

Documentation:

We create and provide comprehensive documentation that includes Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, loop drawings, data sheets, instrument lists, input / output schedules, cable schedules, and electrical, control and instrumentation block diagrams which detail the specifications and connection requirements of each component. This documentation is essential for both installation and future maintenance.

System Integration:

Once the instruments are selected, we specify what is required for integration to any existing or new control systems, such as DCS, PLC, and SCADA systems.

Compliance and Standards:

Ensuring our designs meet industry standards and regulations is crucial for safety and operational integrity. We adhere to standards such as IEC 60079 for electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres, and IEC 61508 for functional safety systems, and specifically IEC 61511 for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). Our commitment to compliance helps ensure that your instrumentation systems operate reliably and within legal and safety guidelines.

Project Tender Support:

We manage control and instrumentation projects for our clients by first completing the detailed design for all measurement and control systems, before writing the scope of work and specifications, prior to inviting companies to tender for the installation works. We support our clients with the technical and commercial evaluation process and manage this through to contract award. Our years of experience in this area ensures our clients control and instrumentation systems are designed to be safe, reliable, accurate and efficient.

Support Services:

We can offer additional support with troubleshooting on process instrument issues, or by creating maintenance procedures for all control and instrumentation systems, including the creation of proof tests for Safety Instrumented Systems. Our support services ensure that your instrumentation systems continue to perform at their best, with regular updates and adjustments to address any issues that arise.
